Custom Engineering / Non-Standard Bearings

Designed for the duty cycle,
not forced into a catalogue number

After a rebuild, a speed increase or a capacity upgrade, the original standard bearing often no longer matches the new load state. ZBZ custom engineering starts from your operating data and redesigns a bearing solution that fits your machine exactly.

Why Custom / Why Customise

Four situations a standard bearing cannot solve

CASE-01

The machine was modified and the loads changed

After a speed increase, a capacity upgrade or a roll-stack rebuild, actual loads already exceed the original design envelope. Keeping the old designation guarantees repeat failures — the bearing has to be recalculated and redesigned to the new load spectrum.

CASE-02

Installation space is constrained

On retrofit sites the housing often cannot be modified. Load capacity then has to be raised through internal geometry, material and process, while the envelope dimensions stay fixed.

CASE-03

The duty is extreme and standard life is not enough

Under combined high temperature, heavy shock, heavy contamination and low-speed heavy load, a conventional design often delivers only a fraction of the target life.

CASE-04

Imported parts mean long lead times and high prices

Some very large or dedicated designs depend on imports, with heavy lead-time and cost pressure. ZBZ can deliver a localised replacement with improved performance, based on reverse engineering and duty-cycle analysis.

Custom Dimensions / Customisation

Nine dimensions, tuned to your duty cycle

Customisation is not simply a change of size — it is a reconfiguration of the entire technical solution.

D-01

Structural design

Number of rows, roller count and profile, contact angle and internal geometry ratios, optimised to the load spectrum.

D-02

Dimensions and form

Very large sizes, special geometries, split designs, flanges or oil grooves and oil holes — tailored to the available space.

D-03

Material

Vacuum-degassed bearing steel, electroslag-remelted (ESR) steel, carburising steel and special alloys, selected for load and temperature.

D-04

Heat treatment

Bainitic austempering, martensitic quenching, stabilising tempering and high-temperature stabilising treatment.

D-05

Clearance and preload

Operating clearance or preload determined from temperature, interference fit, contamination and stiffness requirements.

D-06

Sealing concept

Labyrinth seals, multi-lip contact seals, flinger rings and positive-pressure air seals, combined to the contamination level.

D-07

Lubrication concept

Grease grade and fill quantity, circulating oil passages, solid lubricants or self-lubricating materials.

D-08

Surface and coating

Surface strengthening, phosphating and special coatings to raise wear, corrosion and adhesion resistance.

D-09

Inspection standards

Flaw detection (NDT), accuracy and performance inspection to your specifications or international standards, with a complete inspection report.

  • FAQ / Common Questions

What you may want to ask about custom engineering

Non-standard products require dedicated production scheduling and process preparation, so the minimum quantity depends on structural complexity. As a rule we accept single-piece orders, and unit cost falls as volume rises. The exact figure is confirmed at proposal stage.
Yes. We can reverse-engineer a failed or sample bearing, combine that with material analysis and a duty-cycle review, complete the drawing reconstruction and performance improvement design, and issue full drawings for your approval and records.
It depends on size and process complexity. Standard non-standard designs are scheduled to the agreed cycle once the drawings are approved; very large sizes or projects requiring rig validation are assessed separately with clearly defined milestones. Urgent requirements can be given priority scheduling.
We do not measure value by unit price but by cost per operating hour. If the custom solution more than doubles service life and avoids even one unplanned downtime event, total cost usually falls significantly. We supply a life calculation report so you can run the numbers yourself.
Yes. We produce and inspect to ISO, DIN, ABMA and similar standards or to your own corporate specification, and issue the corresponding inspection reports and material certificates — suitable for export programmes and overseas project supply.
Yes. Once the design is frozen, we lock down the process documentation and inspection standards to ensure batch-to-batch consistency. For customers with continuous production we can also hold buffer stock and open an emergency production channel.

A position that keeps failing deserves to be redesigned once

Send us photographs of the failed bearing and your duty parameters, and you will have an actionable improvement proposal within 72 hours.
